Replacement Windows in Sacramento

Why Replacement Windows are a Smart Investment in Sacramento

Most Sacramento area homeowners wouldn’t cash their paychecks and then throw their money out of the window. But that’s what they’re doing if the windows in their homes are outdated, drafty and are not energy efficient. They are allowing air-conditioned air in the summer and heated air in the winter to literally escape out of the windows.

Sacramento replacement windows are one of the best home improvement projects that any homeowner can invest in.

Replacement Windows in Sacramento

Replacement windows provide a noticeable return on investment immediately and in a variety of important ways.

  • Better Insulating – Lower Energy Costs
  • Better Solar Heat Gain Protection
  • Better Looks
  • Higher Resale Value
  • Better Security
  • Sound Reduction
  • Better Curb Appeal
  • Safer Emergency Exit Path!

Of all the benefits above, not many think about the last one. If you have a reason to get out of your home quickly in an emergency, such as a fire, you might need to exit through the window. This is called an egress.

If your old single pane aluminum or wood builder-original windows are in bad shape, they may jam in an emergency. Or worse yet, maybe they are painted shut.

At Yancey Home Improvements, our new modern vinyl, fiberglass and aluminum windows GLIDE! You’ll want to let the fresh air in (they all come with new screens) and, if needed in an emergency, you’ll be able to exit swiftly and safely.

How You Can Benefit From Replacement Windows in Sacramento

Because windows in Sacramento with little or no insulation can be the cause of a major loss of energy in a home’s environment, installing replacement windows can immediately make a house more energy efficient. Homeowners who have had either fiberglass or vinyl replacement windows installed in their homes can enjoy a major reduction in their monthly energy costs. And with temperatures in the Sacramento area during the summer season reaching over 90 degrees on most days, replacement windows make air conditioning systems operate at peak efficiency since cold air is no longer escaping through the cracks and crevices of old windows. Replacement windows mean that the temperatures inside your home will remain more comfortable on a year-round basis.

Sacramento Replacement Windows also immediately increase the value of any home. Not only does your home have instant improved curb appeal upon installation, new dual-pane windows make any house look more attractive, more modern and better cared for than homes still featuring the original window installations.

  • Geometric Replacement Windows

Replacement windows in Sacramento also protect the investment that homeowners make in their interior furnishings, including the carpeting and drapes. The latest technology used in dual pane replacement windows includes a special coating that prevents the sun’s harmful UV rays from fading or damaging everything from couches, artwork and Oriental rugs due to prolonged exposure to sunlight. Street level noises are also less noticeable after replacement windows have been installed. Replacement windows help increase the security level of the home, which can have a positive effect on home insurance rates.

Sacramento Replacement Window Options

There are a couple of options that you might want to consider when it comes to replacement windows in Sacramento.

Glass Package

If you currently have single pane windows, about all they do for you is keep the rain out. Their low insulating ability, air leakage, and loss of 25 to 50 percent of the energy to heat and cool your home are all good reasons to replace them.

Upgrading to double pane windows increases energy efficiency because of the many options you have in choosing the glass package for your replacement windows.

Look for a window with an Energy Star label which compares performance based on:

  • The U-factor – how well it prevents heat from escaping
  • Solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC) – how well it blocks heat from the sun
  • Visible transmittance – the amount of light that comes through
  • Air leakage – how much air will pass through cracks in the window assembly
  • Condensation resistance – resistance to condensation on the interior surface
  • Products with the Energy Star label help you determine the right window for your area.

Frequently Asked Questions

Tempered glass is treated with heat, resulting in a stronger, more break-resistant window. When it does break, it falls into small pieces that are less likely to cut a person trying to exit the home.

Most often, a broken windowpane will be repaired by a local glass shop. A replacement window involves removing the window and frame unit entirely and replacing it with a new, fully assembled unit with double-pane glass and frame. This is not the quickest or most economical way to address a broken window.

The air gap between two panes of glass is important for insulation. Air by itself is an effective insulating material, but inert gas—since it’s denser than air—adds to the efficiency. Window manufacturers typically use either argon or krypton gas to fill the air gap. Argon is six times denser than air and is the most common inert gas found in windows manufactured for our region. For superior insulation for more demanding climates, krypton—which is 12 times denser than air—can be used.

The U-Factor measures a window’s ability to keep warm air inside the home during winter. Think of it like the insulation in your walls—R-19 is a good level of wall insulation, while R-30 is better for ceilings. In Sacramento’s moderate climate, a low U-Factor such as 0.20 or 0.25 is effective for reducing heat loss.

The Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) is the fraction of the sun’s energy that passes through a window to the surface on the other side. SHGC is expressed as a decimal, and a window must meet certain minimums to qualify as ENERGY STAR® rated. If you place an object directly in sunlight, that represents an SHGC of 1.0—or 100% of the sun’s heat—reaching that object. Think of a hot sidewalk on bare feet—ouch!

In Sacramento’s climate, a typical SHGC range is 0.35 to 0.28, meaning we want less than 30% of the sun’s heat warming our home. In colder climates, a higher SHGC (around 0.60 to 0.80) is preferred to let in more of the sun’s heat and help warm the home naturally.

An Insulated Glass Unit (IGU) is the glass assembly mounted inside the window frame. An IGU typically includes two separate glass panes bonded to a spacer—often called a Super Spacer®—that keeps the panes apart. Spacers are usually made of rubber and sometimes bonded to vinyl. They maintain the air gap between the panes for insulation and are often filled with inert gas to improve efficiency. This design minimizes solar heat transfer from the exterior-facing pane to the interior pane. (See diagram on Simonton’s website.)

A replacement window is a complete, factory-manufactured unit consisting of a frame and an Insulated Glass Unit. Replacement windows are available in both standard sizes and custom dimensions in increments as small as 1/8 inch. For example, while a 36×48-inch window is a stock size, custom ordering can provide a tighter fit without the need for excessive fillers or messy cutting of sheetrock and framing. We offer replacement windows from Simonton®, Ply Gem®, and many other top brands.

Frame Material

Vinyl is currently the most popular replacement window frame material for many reasons:

  • Durability – they don’t require painting or staining and they resist peeling, cracking, and warping
  • Energy efficiency – better thermal protection than wood or aluminum
  • Environmentally friendly – they’re recyclable and last longer than wood and aluminum
  • Many aesthetic options – several color options, design choices, and style combinations
  • Affordability – they can be the most affordable type of replacement windows

I need a total bathroom remodel, and everyone at Yancey has been a delight to work with. All my questions have been answered, the choices of materials were abundant, and Scott guided us expertly through the process one step at a time. I would highly recommend them!

Yancey was awesome to work with. My estimator was Brian Speaks, and he made the entire experience simple and enjoyable for us. There was no high pressure sales, and Brian went out of his way to make sure we got exactly what we wanted and needed. His pricing was fair, and he helped us get financing right on the spot. If I would provide more than 5 stars, I would.

Ryan Calderwood

Tommy was very helpful in explaining the roofing process and itemizing the pricing. He was upfront and honest about policy and interpreting the contract for my mother and I. We are a house full of women and we are always worried about being taken advantage of price-wise but we were not treated that way. Thank you for the excellent service and stunning new roof!

Caroline H

I chose Yancey for my reroof because of their business longevity. They've run into every situation imaginable and Brian addressed these concerns in the contract. Being told in advance is an explanation, being told after the fact is an excuse. They gave no excuses. The team working was always on time and did exceptional quality work with dry rot repair. The roof looks great and I expect it to work well for years to come.
