For example, when you say you have a 2,800-square-foot home, that figure usually refers to the tax record and livable space — not the garage, eaves, or the added surface area from the roof’s pitch (slope).
Roofing is measured in “squares,” with one square equal to 100 square feet. Most shingles come three bundles to a square. Using the 2,800-square-foot home example, once you factor in the garage (about 240 sq. ft.), plus the eaves, porch, and pitch, you might actually need around 3,300 square feet of roofing. That equals 33 squares, or about 99 bundles. It’s also wise to add a few extra bundles for waste and as a safety margin.
Most of the GAF shingles we use in the Sacramento region come in bundles containing about 63 shingles each. Three bundles make up one “square,” which covers 100 square feet — the equivalent of a 10′ by 10′ area.
